Beginning with a single award in 1974, the programme now offers a wide variety of awards.

In addition to the prestigious PMI Project of the Year and PMI PMO of the Year awards, PMI also honours individuals who have made outstanding contributions to the project management profession or to PMI. Other awards recognise those who have made sustained and significant contributions through research or literature, while still others acknowledge the outstanding contributions of volunteers.

The 2016 PMI Professional Awards recipients will be celebrated at the 2016 Professional Awards Gala and Dinner as part of PMI^® Global Congress 2016—North America, on 25–27 September 2016, in San Diego, California, USA.
